Year 6 used the Change 4 Life Sugar Smart app to discover how much sugar, per 100g, different foods contain. We plotted our findings onto line graphs and bar charts. Next, we recorded how much fat the same foods contained and added the results to the same graphs/charts. We were then able to draw conclusions from our data. We were surprised by our findings that, generally, the foods containing the least amount of sugar had a high fat content and vice versa.

Mrs Bratherton has asked Year 6 to complete book reviews to go on display in the library. Choose your favourite book to review and include; title and author, fiction or non-fiction, a synopsis of the story, details about the characters, age range suitable to read the book and why and reasons why you would recommend the book. Please use correcting spelling and capital letters and punctuation - Remember your reviews are going on display!
You have worked so hard this week, using your simplifying skills to solve lots of different fractions problems. Your homework is to use Mathletics to further practice all of the skills you have learnt so far. Tasks have been allocated to you. Gook luck!

This week you should research your favourite poems. This should be age appropriate with the correct level of challenge. You should then select one of these, study the meaning and practice performing it with expression.
You will be expected to perform the poem to the class (you can have the poem as you perform and do not need to memorize it). You should also be required to write a passage about the poem, with a minimum of 100 words, in your English lesson in class on Thursday 28th January (you can make notes and bring these into class with you). In this passage you could be expected to refer to the following: The title and author The type of poem e.g. lyrical, narrative, rhyming etc The meaning of the poem An explanation of what is happening what it is about The structure of the verses and lines The rhyme scheme The language used and why it is effective or ineffective Any other interesting observations or thoughts Good luck. Our new class read is The Boy Who Swam With Piranhas by David Almond. One important thing that we learnt from reading Barnaby Brocket was that one author can write very different books. Many of us had already read The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne and we found it hard to believe that he also wrote The Terrible Thing That Happened to Barnaby Brocket as the books are very different. We are now discovering that our new class read, by David Almond, is nothing like Skellig, which is the book that he is probably most well-known for writing. Oh, and you may notice that the illustrator of this book, Oliver Jeffers, is also the illustrator of Barnaby Brocket!
Here is a summary of the book, which we are already enjoying and laughing along to... Stanley Potts’s uncle Ernie has developed an over-the-top fascination with canning fish in the house, and life at 69 Fish Quay Lane has turned barmy. But there’s darkness in the madness, and when Uncle Ernie’s obsession takes an unexpectedly cruel turn, Stan has no choice but to leave. As he journeys away from the life he’s always known, he mingles with a carnival full of eccentric characters and meets the legendary Pancho Pirelli, the man who swims in a tank full of perilous piranhas. Will Stan be bold enough to dive in the churning waters himself and choose his own destiny? This week in guided reading, we have looked at an extract from The Wind in the Willows. Your homework is to find out about the author, Kenneth Grahame, and to create a poster about the key events in his life. You have an information sheet, you can also do further research on the internet to find out more about him. Spelling list for this week:
This week week have been finding common factors to simplify fractions and find equivalent fractions. To practise your skills, simplify the fractions on the sheet, by finding their common factors, to fill in the missing digits.
You also have a sheet to keep a record of how well you are doing on TT Rockstar. Keep practising to become times tables superstars!

This week in RE, we have been finding out about promises. Pastor Phil came in to visit us and to talk about promises in the bible. We also wrote our own promises, reflected on broken promises and thought about when different promises are made. For homework, write a paragraph about the day, including what you learnt and which part you enjoyed the most. To be completed by Thursday 14th January. This term 6ST have enjoyed listening to The Terrible Thing That Happened to Barnaby Brocket by John Boyne. Barnaby defies the laws of gravity. Instead of standing on the ground, he floats - much to the horror of his parents (who are VERY normal people). They are shocked and horrified by having such an abnormal child. Embarassed by what the neighbours will say, they try all kinds of strategies for keeping Barnaby's feet on the ground - from giving him a rucksack full of sand to making him wear a collar and lead, to shutting him away in a school for 'difficult' children. But whatever they do, Barnaby can't stop floating - and one day, when a school trip unexpectedly leads to his unusual gift becoming front page news, Alistair and Eleanor decide enough is enough and they can't take it any more. Barnaby has to go....
We have all been entertained, shared laughs and felt deep sympathy for Barnaby as we have travelled with him on his adventures, which have taken him to all four corners of the globe. We are coming to the end of the book now and we will all be sad to say goodbye to Barnaby but we are excited to find out what happens. Everyone in 6ST would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys adventures and a few laughs! We can't wait to start out next book in the New Year (keep checking in on here to find out what it is!!) As part of our WW2 topic, we produced our own modern day shelters in DT. This involved us researching, planning collaboratively, choosing resources and designing, building and adapting, testing and finally evaluating each stage. Take a look at us at work... In English we have been looking at journalistic writing, focusing on the features of newspaper articles, including direct and indirect speech. The children worked very hard (both at school and with their homework) to produce their own articles, reporting on the evacuation of children during WW2. They drafted, edited and redrafted their written articles before typing them into a Word document to produce genuine looking printed articles. We have been able to create a fabulous class newspaper of all the articles. Here is a snapshot of the children at work and some of their finished work.
Last week our spellings were words that have unstressed vowels in them - we don't hear them when we say the word. Following the test we had, it is clear that we need further practise with these words.
For your homework, write 200 words, about a subject of your choice, and include the following words: voluntary, separate, describe, miniature, memorable, interest, desperate Your writing should be punctuated correctly and should also include the following: - embedded clauses - a variety of sentences - fronted adverbials Your homework this week is to help you prepare for more multiplication work next week. You have a sheet to complete then, for further practise with your times times, click on this link https://www.mathsisfun.com/numbers/math-trainer-multiply.html to the Maths Trainer website to see how strong your skills are. After you have been on this site, leave a comment on this blog post to share how you got on. Good luck! Your holiday homework is to practise your grammar and writing skills by producing a 200 word passage to include the following: - 2 embedded clauses - 2 fronted adverbials -1 similie -1 metaphor -1 personification -2 compound adjectives - 5 words that you haven't used before To start you off, use this opener to begin your Bonfire Night themed writing... Full of awe and wonder, I gazed up in amazement as the dark, night sky was instantly set alight by racing rockets.... Remember to keep reading (for pleasure!) and practise your spellings regularly. Have a fun and safe half term, Miss Taylor. In science, Year Six has been learning about the circulatory system. The children made predictions and carried out an experiment to investigate the effects of exercise on their heart rate. They entered their collected data into the Get in the Zone programme on the laptops to generate a graph of their results, which they then analysed and evaluated. Here is a short video to show some of their work... This week you have had the tricky job of writing a narrative piece of work using flashbacks. This has involved taking the reader between the past and the present by using a variety of great time connectives as well as remembering to write in either the past or the present tense - a lot to remember!
For a little more practise before we finish our writing, you have some sentences to change between past and present tense for your homework. You have worked really hard this week and so far in year six have produced some great pieces of writing, well done! Have a great weekend, Miss Taylor. You have all worked really hard this week and are Super Rounders of VERY big numbers! We do however need a little more practise of prime numbers so your homework this week is to do some investigating and then answering some questions about prime numbers (there might also be the odd square number question in there too!).
Well done everybody and have a lovely weekend, you deserve it :-) This week we have been looking at how the children of the 1940s had to be evacuated for their own safety during World War II. For your homework, you have a reading comprehension to complete to deepen your understanding further. Read the text carefully and then answer the questions, using the text to give evidence for your responses.
Have a lovely weekend. For your homework this week you have some pattern problem solving to do!
Look carefully at the patterns to work out the sequences. Happy problem solving!! The children felt very sad that they had to be sent away (evacuated) from their friends and families so that they could stay safe during the war. After a strict inspection, the children watched Goodnight Mr Tom and were then taken away from school to eat their lunch from brown paper bags.....We all learned a lot about how hard life was for the children of the 1940s.
This week your homework is to practise writing sentences using a variety of punctuation on the activity sheet (it is double sided!). Hopefully this will be another reminder to try to use punctuation consistently in your writing! You will have a spelling test on Monday, here is the link to your spellings should you need it This week we have been learning how to read, write and order decimal numbers to 3 decimal places. For your homework, complete both sides of the activity sheets as extra practise.
Have a good weekend. To be completed by Thursday 24th September
The paragraph below has no capital letters or punctuation. Can you re-write it below putting the capital letters and punctuation in the right place? felicity WILL you look this way exclaimed Mrs Appleton you have been fidgeting all morning felicity tore her eyes reluctantly away from the coin she was holding in her hand and tried to concentrate on her class teacher who was talking about maths – something to do with multiplication Felicity vaguely recalled she caught matts eye and they grinned excitedly at each other this was it today was the day the two best friends had been waiting for this day for what had seemed an eternity both of them had been looking at the clock every 5 minutes both willing the hands to move forwards faster so that they could be whisked off home by felicitys parents at lunch time they were going on holiday! To be completed by Thursday 24th September
Write these numbers in words – remember to read them out to yourself first as it will help you! 1,154,320 3,765,283 18,291,103 35,653,251 43,546,891 10,685,205 79,504,981 25,653,095 You have all done really well in your spelling tests this week - well done! It is VERY important that we keep practising, especially the trickier ones. So your homework challenge this week is to write a 100 word nonsense story using the following words:
- stomach - frightening - admitted - inedible - babies' - courageous - tension - obey Although your story doesn't have to make sense, your sentences MUST so you need to use each of the words correctly. If you don't know what a word means you know what to do!!! Finally, remember that punctuation is ALWAYS important to make sure your sentences are structured correctly. I'm looking forward to reading your stories! |
